Released by Konami in 1991, Sunset Riders took the classic run-and-gun arcade formula and dropped it straight into an over-the-top Wild West shootout. The result was one of those games that was easy to understand, hard to master, and almost impossible to walk past without wanting to play.

You chose from four bounty hunters — Steve, Billy, Bob, and Cormano — and set out across saloons, trains, frontier towns, and dusty canyons collecting bounties on increasingly ridiculous outlaws.

And ridiculous is exactly what made it great.

This wasn’t a serious Western.

This was a 90s arcade Western.

Bad guys poured out of windows. Dynamite flew everywhere. Bulls charged across the screen. Horses became moving platforms. Entire buildings seemed determined to collapse at exactly the worst possible moment.
