Before Quake, there was DOOM.

In 1993, id Software unleashed DOOM and essentially kicked down the door for modern first-person shooters. Fast action, multiplayer deathmatches, secret-filled levels, demons, shotguns and enough attitude to terrify every office productivity manager in America—DOOM became a phenomenon. 

But id Software wasn’t interested in simply making DOOM again.

Three years later, in 1996, they released Quake, and the technological jump was enormous. Instead of the pseudo-3D environments of earlier shooters, Quake featured real-time 3D rendering, polygonal enemies and genuinely three-dimensional environments. Combine that with incredibly responsive movement, rocket launchers, dark gothic castles and monsters that looked like they crawled out of somebody’s nightmare, and suddenly gaming felt very different. 

And then there was the soundtrack.

Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails helped give Quake its eerie industrial atmosphere. The game didn’t just look dark—it sounded like something terrible was waiting around the next corner.

But perhaps Quake’s biggest legacy came when players stopped worrying about the monsters and started worrying about each other.

DOOM helped pioneer multiplayer deathmatch, but Quake helped turn competitive FPS gaming into a culture. LAN parties exploded. Rocket jumping became practically a martial art. Players learned maps down to the inch, and speed suddenly mattered just as much as aim. Quake’s competitive scene became an important early foundation for FPS esports. 

It even spawned something bigger than the game itself.

Later in 1996, a few dozen gamers gathered at a hotel in Garland, Texas, for a BYOC gaming event and Quaketournament.

That little gathering became QuakeCon.

Thirty years later, thousands of gamers still descend on Texas carrying gaming PCs, energy drinks and absolutely no intention of getting enough sleep. 

And somehow, in 2026, Quake is still alive and kicking.

For its 30th anniversary, MachineGames and id Software just released Dawn of the Machine, a brand-new Quakeepisode featuring 19 new maps, new enemies, weapons, music and even a new Deathmatch map. Better yet, it's a free update for the modern version of Quake.

There has not yet been an official announcement of a completely new full-length Quake sequel, so we aren't calling Quake 6 confirmed just yet.
