Make It So: How Star Trek: The Next Generation Helped Shape the ’90s

Star Trek 90s

Before streaming. Before smartphones. Before everybody carried a computer in their pocket.

There was the USS Enterprise-D.

Star Trek: The Next Generation technically launched in 1987, but by the time the 1990s arrived, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his crew had become a full-blown part of pop culture. For a generation of ’90s kids and adults, TNG wasn’t just a TV show—it was a weekly glimpse at what the future might actually look like.

And somehow, that future looked pretty awesome.

Captain Picard gave us “Make it so.” Commander Riker perfected the dramatic chair maneuver. Data spent years trying to understand what it meant to be human. Worf made Klingons cool again. And somewhere along the way, the Borg gave an entire generation the slightly terrifying reminder that resistance is futile.

But The Next Generation had an impact far beyond its characters.

The show helped make science fiction feel mainstream. This wasn’t a niche program hiding on late-night television. TNGbecame appointment viewing, spawned action figures, video games, books, trading cards, conventions, toys, and endless debates about who was the greatest Star Trek captain.

And yes, we know exactly how dangerous that last debate can become.

The technology was just as memorable.

Characters walked around with PADDs that looked suspiciously like tablets. They tapped small badges to communicate instantly. Computers responded to spoken questions. The Holodeck offered fully immersive virtual worlds. Information was available almost instantly from anywhere on the ship.

In the ’90s, all of that felt incredibly futuristic.

Today? We talk to our phones, wear smartwatches, video chat from almost anywhere, and carry touch-screen computers everywhere we go.

We’re still waiting on the Holodeck, though.

TNG also captured something wonderfully optimistic about the era. The future it imagined wasn’t perfect, but it suggested that humanity could become smarter, more curious, and more cooperative. Problems were often solved with science, diplomacy, reason, and—when absolutely necessary—a well-timed photon torpedo.

That optimism fit perfectly into the early-’90s fascination with technology and what might come next.

By the time The Next Generation aired its finale in 1994, it had become one of the defining science-fiction shows of its generation. And thanks to reruns, VHS tapes, movies, video games, conventions, and a very passionate fanbase, it never really disappeared.

For anyone who grew up in the ’90s, hearing those opening words still hits differently:

“Space… the final frontier.”

So here’s to Picard, Data, Worf, Riker, Geordi, Troi, Crusher—and one of the shows that helped make the future feel exciting.

Now if someone could just get that Holodeck working, we’d really appreciate it.

Make it so.
