Some arcade games make sense immediately.
Pac-Man eats dots.Donkey Kong climbs ladders.Space Invaders shoots aliens.
And then there’s Joust.
Released by Williams Electronics in 1982, Joust basically asked one very important question:
What if medieval knights fought each other while riding giant flying birds over pools of lava?
And somehow, the answer was: absolutely yes.
Joust became one of the most unique games of the golden age of arcades because there really wasn’t anything else quite like it. Instead of running around on foot, players rode enormous ostrich-like birds, flapping their way through floating platforms while battling enemy knights riding buzzards.
The rules were beautifully simple.
Hit another rider higher than they hit you, and you win the joust.
Hit them lower?
Well… better luck with your next life.
That simple mechanic turned Joust into a game of timing, momentum, positioning, and complete chaos.
And then there were the eggs.
Defeated enemies dropped eggs that you had to quickly collect before they hatched into even more dangerous opponents. Ignore them too long and suddenly your little medieval bird battle became a much bigger problem.
Oh, and did we mention the lava?
Fall too low and something called the Lava Troll might reach out and grab your bird.
Because apparently giant flying birds and evil knights weren’t enough.
Two Players. One Screen. Total Chaos.
One of the best things about Joust was its two-player mode.
You could technically work together.
Technically.
But sooner or later somebody would “accidentally” fly underneath the other player and knock them into the lava.
Friendships were tested.
Trust was destroyed.
Quarters were spent.
It was glorious.
That combination of cooperation and competition made Joust one of those arcade games that was just as much fun to watch as it was to play.
More Than 40 Years Later, It Still Works
That might be the coolest thing about Joust.
There are no complicated tutorials. No massive skill trees. No downloads. No 80-gigabyte updates.
You walk up, hit the button, flap the wings, and within about ten seconds you understand exactly what you're supposed to do.
Mastering it?
That’s another story.
More than four decades after its release, Joust is still weird, challenging, frantic, and ridiculously fun.
And really, that’s what makes classic arcade games special.
Sometimes the best video game ideas aren’t realistic.
Sometimes they’re about riding a giant bird into battle while desperately trying not to get dragged into lava by a monster.
