There are video games that make perfect sense.
And then there is Revolution X.
Released into arcades by Midway in 1994, Revolution X asked one of the most important questions of the 90s:
What if Aerosmith was kidnapped by an evil government organization and the only way to save rock ’n’ roll was with machine guns and exploding compact discs?
Obviously, someone at Midway answered:
“Make the game.”

Revolution X was a rail shooter, meaning the game moved you through the action while you concentrated on blasting practically everything that appeared on the screen.
The arcade cabinet featured mounted guns, digitized actors, loud music, explosions, secret rooms, and enough flashing chaos to make it impossible to ignore from across the arcade.
And right in the middle of all of it was Aerosmith.
Steven Tyler and the rest of the band weren’t simply providing music for the game. They were actually part of the story.
An authoritarian organization known as the New Order Nation has taken control, outlawed things like music and youth culture, and kidnapped Aerosmith.
Your mission?
Save the band.
Save rock ’n’ roll.
Probably destroy several thousand televisions, helicopters, speakers, vehicles, and anything else unfortunate enough to appear in your crosshairs along the way.
Your Secret Weapon: CDs
Nothing dates Revolution X more beautifully than its special weapon.
Compact discs.
Today, throwing a CD at somebody might sound like something you do while cleaning out your garage.
In 1994?
CDs were the future.
So naturally, Revolution X turned them into explosive weapons.
Throughout the game you could collect CDs and launch them at enemies for massive damage.
It is difficult to imagine a more perfectly 90s sentence than:
“Save Aerosmith by shooting explosive CDs at an evil government.”
And somehow it worked.
Aerosmith Was Everywhere in the 90s
The Aerosmith connection also made perfect sense for the time.
The band had already been around for decades, but during the late 80s and 90s they experienced an enormous resurgence. MTV was filled with Aerosmith videos, songs like Cryin’, Crazy, and Amazing were everywhere, and suddenly the band had an entirely new generation of fans.
So putting Aerosmith inside an arcade game wasn’t as random in 1994 as it might seem today.
This was the era when celebrities were starting to appear everywhere in games.
Michael Jackson had Moonwalker.
Shaquille O’Neal had Shaq Fu.
Michael Jordan had Chaos in the Windy City.
And Aerosmith apparently decided they needed a heavily armed revolution.
Fair enough.
The Cabinet Was the Real Experience
Like many arcade games from the period, Revolution X was eventually brought home to consoles.
But this was a game that belonged in an arcade.
Standing in front of that giant cabinet with other players, gripping a mounted gun while Aerosmith music blasted through the speakers was completely different from sitting at home with a controller.
The arcade version could support three players, which meant the screen quickly became a disaster of bullets, explosions, enemies, and people yelling at each other.
Exactly as an arcade game should be.
The home versions never quite captured that same experience.
But in the arcade?
It was glorious nonsense.
A Perfect Time Capsule of 1994
Is Revolution X the greatest shooter ever made?
Probably not.
Is it one of the most wonderfully ridiculous examples of 90s arcade culture?
Absolutely.
Everything about it feels like somebody dumped 1994 into a blender:
